I’m trying to locate someone’s social media accounts but I only have their name and maybe a photo. What’s the best way to find someone social media profiles?
Hey @CrimsonOrbit, this is a pretty common challenge, and thankfully there are some solid OSINT techniques you can use. As a freelance journalist, I often find myself in similar situations when I’m researching people online.
When you only have a name and a photo, reverse image search is usually my first go-to. Google Images, TinEye, and Yandex are all good for this. If the photo has been used online before, these tools can sometimes point you to social media profiles, articles, or other websites where it’s appeared. I’ve had success finding old MySpace or LiveJournal profiles this way, which can then lead to more current accounts.
Beyond that, if you have their full name, try searching it directly on different social media platforms. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and even Instagram have pretty robust search functions. Sometimes adding a city or a known workplace can help narrow it down if it’s a common name.
I’ve also been experimenting with some newer tools lately. I recently tested Findsio
and it actually helped me identify several social media profiles linked to a phone number I had for a source, which was pretty impressive. It’s definitely worth checking out if you have additional data points like that.
What kind of photo do you have? Is it a professional headshot or more of a casual photo? That can sometimes influence where it might show up online.
Hey @CrimsonOrbit, welcome to the forum!
I’ve been down this rabbit hole a few times myself. Actually had to do this recently when reconnecting with a college buddy - all I had was an old graduation photo and his first name lol.
Building on what @CuriousGuy mentioned, I’d say Yandex reverse image search is honestly underrated for finding social media profiles. It tends to dig deeper than Google Images in my experience, especially for finding VK or lesser-known platforms where the same profile pic might be used.
One trick that’s worked for me: if you have their photo, try uploading it to PimEyes (though it has limited free searches). It specifically indexes faces across the web and can pull up social media profiles pretty accurately.
Also, don’t sleep on the username connection. Once you find ONE username on any platform, try searching that same handle across other sites using tools like namechk or whatsmyname. People often reuse usernames everywhere.
What platforms are you most interested in finding them on? That might help narrow down the approach!
Hey @CrimsonOrbit, I know this feeling all too well. I’m actually dealing with something similar right now - trying to figure out if my partner has active dating app profiles.
The reverse image search tip from @CuriousGuy is solid. I’ve been using Google Images and TinEye myself to check photos. Also tried social media searches on the major platforms, but honestly, I’m more focused on finding dating profiles specifically - like Tinder, Hinge, Bumble.
Have you tried searching by phone number? That’s been on my radar. Some tools claim they can pull up dating app accounts linked to a number. I checked out username searches too, but only helps if you already know one of their handles.
Curious - are you looking for general social media or something more specific like dating apps? The approach might be different depending on what you’re after.
@MikeOS Thanks — totally agree about Yandex and PimEyes. I ran Yandex and it actually pulled up an old VK profile from a graduation pic, which I wouldn’t have found on Google. PimEyes’ free searches are stingy but worth a try. Also, someone here suggested Findsio and I checked a phone number there — it showed several linked social profiles, which surprised me. Any tips on combining image searches with username-hunting to speed this up?
Hey @Jess89, great to hear Yandex and PimEyes delivered for you! You hit on a key point: different reverse image search engines often have varied indexing priorities and regional strengths, which explains why you might find profiles Google misses.
To combine image searches with username hunting efficiently, consider this: an effective reverse image search often provides not just direct profile links, but also associated articles or forum posts where the image (and potentially a username) appeared. This is where the underlying data systems of these search engines shine, correlating visual features with metadata.
Once you have a potential username, even if it’s from an older profile, specialized social media lookup tools can then rapidly query multiple platforms. These tools essentially automate what you’d do manually, leveraging APIs or scraping public profiles, cross-referencing that username across their vast indexed databases to find matches. This iterative approach of visual identification leading to textual queries is highly effective.
