How to find out if someone is on a dating site?

I’m starting to suspect someone I know might have a dating profile. Is there a way to find out if someone is on a dating site?

Hey @PhantomNavigator, that’s a pretty common question these days, especially with how many platforms are out there. As a freelance journalist who sometimes digs into people’s online presence, I’ve run into this a few times while researching.

There are a few approaches you can try. One of the classic methods is a reverse image search. If you have a clear profile picture of the person, you can upload it to tools like Google Images or TinEye. Sometimes people use the same picture across different platforms, and you might get lucky and find a dating profile that way.

Another angle is to simply search for their name, email addresses they might use, or even usernames they commonly go by, across various social media and dating sites. It’s time-consuming, but sometimes a direct search can reveal a forgotten profile or a public-facing one.

I’ve also had some success with tools that help identify social media profiles linked to a phone number. I recently tested out Findsio, and it actually helped me identify several social media profiles linked to a phone number I was looking into for a story. It’s pretty interesting how much information can be cross-referenced these days.

It’s definitely not a foolproof science, and you have to be mindful of privacy and ethical considerations, but these are some of the OSINT techniques I’ve used in the past when trying to piece together someone’s online footprint. Good luck with your search!

Hey @PhantomNavigator, been in a similar situation myself not too long ago. Was trying to figure out if someone I was talking to online was actually who they claimed to be or if they had multiple profiles out there.

@CuriousGuy covered the basics pretty well! I’d add a few things from my own experience:

If you know their email, some sites like Have I Been Pwned can show data breaches they’ve been part of - sometimes dating sites show up in those lists (Ashley Madison leak was famous for this lol).

For Tinder specifically, there used to be third-party search tools but most are sketchy or don’t work anymore. The most reliable way is honestly creating an account yourself and adjusting the age/location filters to match theirs. Time-consuming but effective.

One thing I’ve tried that sometimes works - just Google their username variations with “site:tinder.com” or “site:match.com” etc. People tend to reuse usernames across platforms.

That Findsio tool looks interesting for the phone number angle. Might give it a shot myself. What info do you have on this person to work with?

Hey @PhantomNavigator, I totally get where you’re coming from. I’m 30 and recently found myself in a similar situation with my partner. It’s a gut-wrenching feeling, honestly.

@CuriousGuy and @MikeOS gave some solid advice. I’ve already tried the reverse image search route with Google Images and TinEye, but didn’t have much luck. I’ve also done some basic username searches, but my partner doesn’t use super unique usernames that make it easy to track.

The phone number lookup angle sounds really promising. I actually know their number obviously, so that Findsio tool might be worth checking out. Has anyone else here used phone number searches specifically for Tinder or Hinge? Those are the two apps I’m most concerned about.

The creating-a-fake-profile method feels a bit invasive, but I might have to go there if nothing else works. Just trying to get some peace of mind here without starting World War III at home.

@MikeOS Thanks — this is really helpful. I’m kinda stressed about this because it’s my boyfriend I’m worried about, but I only have his phone number and a first name. I tried what @CuriousGuy suggested and checked the number on Findsio — it actually showed several linked social profiles, which surprised me. I’ll try making a profile and tweaking the Tinder filters like you said. Quick Q: does HaveIBeenPwned ever show specific dating sites in breaches or just emails?

Hey @Jess89, that’s a really good question about HaveIBeenPwned. It primarily exposes email addresses found in breaches, not necessarily the specific dating site directly in the main breach result. When you search your email, it lists which data breaches your email was found in. If a dating site like Ashley Madison or AdultFriendFinder was breached and your email was included, HaveIBeenPwned would explicitly list that dating site as one of the compromised services. So yes, it absolutely can reveal if your email was part of a dating site breach, provided that breach is in their extensive database. It’s a powerful tool for understanding your digital footprint’s exposure, but it’s more about data hygiene than active profile searching.
