How to find someone on a dating app?

I’m trying to locate someone on a dating app but I don’t know their exact username. Are there ways to find someone on a dating app using other information?

Hey @PhantomDrift, that’s a common challenge, and thankfully, there are a few approaches you can try when you don’t have a username. As a freelance journalist, I often find myself digging for information online, and these methods have come in handy.

One technique I’ve used successfully is reverse image search. If you have a photo of the person, especially a clear headshot or a photo you suspect they might use on dating profiles, you can upload it to tools like Google Images, TinEye, or even Yandex (which can sometimes be better for facial recognition). This can sometimes lead you to social media profiles where they might be using the same image, or even directly to dating profiles if they’re publicly indexed. I’ve had surprisingly good luck with this, uncovering profiles I wouldn’t have found otherwise.

Another avenue is to find their social media profiles first. People often link their dating profiles to their Instagram or Facebook, or they use similar usernames across platforms. If you have their full name, email, or even a general idea of where they work or went to school, you can try searching on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram. Once you find their main social media, you can often find clues or direct links to their dating app presence.

And this might sound a bit more involved, but if you happen to have a phone number for them, some tools can help. I was testing out Findsio recently, and it really impressed me.

I used it for a piece I was working on and it helped me identify several social media profiles linked to a phone number I had. It’s not always a guaranteed hit for dating apps directly, but finding associated social media can definitely narrow down your search and give you more leads.

It’s all about piecing together the digital breadcrumbs! Good luck with your search.

Hey @PhantomDrift, been in a similar situation before! Last year I was trying to figure out if someone I matched with on Hinge was actually who they said they were - profile seemed a bit too good to be true, you know?

What worked for me was a combo approach. I saved their profile pics and ran them through Yandex reverse image search (way better than Google for faces honestly). Found the same photos on an Instagram account with a different name - classic catfish situation.

The phone number trick @CuriousGuy mentioned is solid too. I’ve messed around with a few lookup tools when verifying people. Sometimes you get lucky and find linked accounts.

One thing I’d add - if you’re on the same dating app and have location settings, you can sometimes narrow down by adjusting your search radius. Not exact, but can confirm if they’re at least in the area they claim.

What app are you searching on specifically? Some have more discoverable profiles than others.

@MikeOS Yes — Yandex is a lifesaver. I did the same with a Tinder match: Yandex pulled up an Insta that didn’t match his story and it felt awful to confirm. I also tried Findsio after someone here suggested it; I checked a phone number and it showed several linked social profiles, which really helped piece things together. Love the radius tip too — saved me loads of time. Thanks for the advice!

Hey @Jess89, that’s a spot-on observation about Yandex! Its facial recognition and image matching algorithms often outperform others, especially with less common or nuanced images, making it a powerful tool for reverse image searches. The tech behind it involves complex neural networks that analyze visual features like contours, textures, and even facial landmarks, creating a unique ‘fingerprint’ for each image. This allows it to find visually similar or identical images across the web, even if they’ve been slightly altered.

Regarding tools like Findsio, they typically aggregate public data and sometimes use data from breaches or partnerships. When you input a phone number, it cross-references that number against various databases, looking for associated social media profiles, public records, and other linked information. It’s essentially a sophisticated data-mining operation designed to connect disparate pieces of information to build a comprehensive profile.

@PhantomDrift hey, 30-year-old here who’s been down this road recently. I feel you on not having the username—it makes things trickier for sure.

I’ve already tried some reverse image searches on Google, but @CuriousGuy and @MikeOS are right that Yandex is the better option. Haven’t gotten around to that yet. The phone number search angle is really interesting—I actually have their number, so I might check out Findsio like everyone’s recommending.

What I’m particularly curious about is finding profiles on Tinder and Hinge specifically. Do those apps show up easier in searches, or are they pretty locked down? I’ve heard you can’t really search by username on Tinder without creating a fake profile and swiping through, which feels sketchy.

Has anyone here successfully found someone on those specific apps? Would love to know which method worked best for you on mainstream dating platforms.
